Morning Tea...

Thank you Ruby for such a LOVELY MORNING TEA PARTY!!!
You made Momma's morning!
(those letters that you see in the backround behind Ruby & Me are the ones pictured below...)

These wooden letters were bought for Ruby by her Nanna at this cute little store here in downtown Beverly, called Casa De'Moda.
It has really unique & one of a kind type stuff that's kinda pricey but
WELL WORTH A VISITnow & then for the most amazing finds!!

Above is a picture of my collection of 80's Cabbage Patch Kids in MINT CONDITION!
This doll case sits against the wall & is situated directly between
Ruby's bedroom door & Momma's .
Each day while Ruby plays in her playroom, she gets to enjoy them as the main view!
I love them still at 33 and hope someday Ruby will enjoy playing with them too...
right now, however, it's just Bear that makes her heart go pitter-pat. =) hehehe

pssst: Center row, little boy all the way to the left in the red sweatsuit with blue numbers on it, that would be T.C. (short for Theodore Chris...)
T.C. was my FIRST CPK EVER!!
T.C. is still in FANTASTIC CONDITION right down to the powder scented hair!!!!
Santa brought T.C. to me Christmas of 83'. MAN I'M OLD!

Another Clean Bill of Health!!!

Well, today marks the SECOND SUCCESSFUL DOCTOR'S VISIT for our friend Miss.Ruby Cate! My doctor nearly FELL OVER when she came into the room to see my child walking around her exam room while just holding onto one of my fingers. (the last time she had seen Ruby was just after we had returned from China & little miss 'Cheeks' couldn't even crawl yet... she just dragged her lower body around like a soldier on maneuvers...)

Ruby looked up, smiled and kept on walking... "Sorry Doc, we've got things to do & places to walk to...." LOL

Here are Ruby's current stats:
22 lbs 11oz
31 inches long

Ruby's in all the 'NORMAL' percentiles for height & weight for her age!!!
WOOOOO HOOOOOOO

She did get her first immunization shot today, it was for Hib (Haemophilus Influenzae Type b)
(and yes she cried & this time it wasn't because I had woken her up, but because it hurt... but her friend Bear was there the WHOLE TIME & he helped a GREAT DEAL! THANKS BEAR!)

What is Hib you ask? (how the hell was I supposed to know? LOL I'm a Nanny, not a doctor! But it got me to thinking, I usually know all this kid related stuff but here was something I had not ever about, so I thought that perhaps it would be a good idea to share this with all of you... since knowledge IS power, so the following is what Hib is...)

Haemophilus influenzae type b (Hib) disease is a serious disease caused by a bacteria. It usually strikes children under 5 years old.
Your child can get Hib disease by being around other children or adults who may have the bacteria and not know it. The germs spread from person to person. If the germs stay in the child's nose and throat, the child probably will not get sick. But sometimes the germs spread into the lungs or the bloodstream, and then Hib can cause serious problems.
Before Hib vaccine, Hib disease was the leading cause of bacterial meningitis among children under 5 years old in the United States. Meningitis is an infection of the brain and spinal cord coverings, which can lead to lasting brain damage and deafness. Hib disease can also cause:
-pneumonia
-severe swelling in the throat, making it hard to breathe
-infections of the blood, joints, bones, and covering of the heart
-death

Before Hib vaccine, about 20,000 children in the United States under 5 years old got severe Hib disease each year and nearly 1,000 people died.

Hib vaccine can prevent Hib disease.
Many more children would get Hib disease if we stopped vaccinating.

Children should get Hib vaccine at:
2 months of age
4 months of age
6 months of age
12-15 months of age
Children less than 6 weeks of age should NOT get Hib vaccine.

If you miss a dose or get behind schedule, get the next dose as soon as you can. There is no need to start over.

Hib vaccine may be given at the same time as other vaccines.
For more information on this and other vaccinations, visit the Center for Disease Control's National Immunization Program's website

Ok so that's Ruby's first official vaccine since becoming my daughter & I'm sure there will be MANY MORE TO COME. For now, I just like knowing that I'm doing everything I can to be sure she's a happy, healthy girl!
(...probably a little 'too' healthy as the following pics clearly show the beginnings of a 'pot belly'!)

FUNKY SOCKS EXCHANGE!!

CALLING ALL FUNKY SOCK LOVERS!!!

I got the KEWLEST mail today from my friend Connie who lives two houses down from me... and it goes a little something like this:

Dear Amy,

This is a funky socks exchange. Please send a unique funky pair of ladies size socks to the person listed in #1 space below. Then move my name up into the #1 spot & add your name into the #2 spot. Only your name and my name should be on the list when you send your letter out. (I've enclosed a blank letter for copying.)

This is not a chain letter, but rather a fun project to spice up WINTER! It's just for fun!! If you cannot do this in five days, please let me know so it will be fair to those participating. A minila envelope should mail the socks nicely. You should receive 36 pairs of funky fun socks for only the peice of ONE!
It's fun to see the differenbt places where your socks will come from! Seldom does anyone drop out because, let's face it, we can ALL USE FUNKY FUN SOCKS TO BOOST OUR OUTFITS!
The turn around is extremely fast because there are only two names on the list. You should begin receiving funky socks in about two weeks. Have fun but remember, if you do not want to do this, please let me know so that nobody has to miss out on the fun! THANKS!!!

-Connie

Ok, so that's kinda how the letter went & obviously I'm not putting all the info into my blog but rather, I'm asking ALL MY READERS IF ANYONE WANTS TO DO THIS! I know of two friends already who would LOVE TO DO THIS as they both are SOCK WHORES AND LOVE FUN SILLY SOCKS!!!!
I would rather ask ahead of time who wants to do this so that when I send my letters out I know that the person I'm sending it to will absolutely be excited about doing this with me!

BRING ON THE FUNKY SOCKS PEOPLE! I CAN'T WAIT!!!

If anyone is interested in doing this, please email me your address and once I reach my total of 6 people to send my letter to, I'll save your addresses for my friend Jen cuz she doesn't have 6 people yet & SHE BUYS FUN KRAZY SOCKS!!! So she's a good person to have BUYING YOUR SOCKS~!!! =)

Anyway, I think it's fun and I can't wait to do it so everyone let me know if you're interested!! =)

Common Sense... Aisle 5!

An actual conversation between a total stranger (we'll call her Lady X,) and myself at a recent trip to Target:

Lady X: "Oh, she's so cute, did you get her in china?"
Me: "Ruby was born in China, yes... and then I adopted her."
Lady X: "Wow, how much did that cost?"
Me: *smiling* "Why do you want to know?"
Lady X: *embarassed look on face* "Oh well, she's cute anyway, what's her name?"
Me: "I just told you her name, it's Ruby..."
Lady X: "Oh, no I mean what's her real name, her chinese one?"
Me: "Her real name is Ruby. Her chinese name was Fu Pei Mu..."
Lady X: "So does she have your last name?"
Me: (No, she has yours, DIPSHIT) "Yes, she's my daughter, of course she has my last name..."
Lady X: "Oh... well do you even know what it means?"
Me: "Well, do you know what your last name means?"
Lady X: "No, I meant her chinese one..."
Me: "Yes I do know what it means. I'm sorry but I didn't get your name?"
Lady X: (insert really cheezy white trash name here)
Me: *smiling* "Well, 'cheezy white trash lady', Ruby's chinese name means an admired peony tree/flower."
Lady X: "Well, what the heck is that supposed to mean?"
Me: *smiling* "Does it really make a difference to you?"
Lady X: "Sorry, I was just asking... So, does she speak Chinese?"
Me: "Ruby is only 16 months old, do YOU think she speaks Chinese?"
Lady X: (looking dazed & confused) Uh, I dunno, does she?
Me: *beginning a 'glare' at this point* She can understand both English & Italian & speaks a few words in English, she's still a baby & still learning."
Lady X: "So, she doesn't speak any Chinese then?"
Me: "No, Ruby does not speak Chinese, do YOU?"
Lady X: "No, why would I speak Chinese?"
Me: *definately glaring now* "Well, why would Ruby? "
Lady X: (sensing that I'm about one stupid question away from popping her in her BIG ASS NOSE) "Oh, well, she's really cute anyways, bye..."
Me: "Thank you, I know. Goodbye."

SERIOUSLY? SERIOUSLY!

Maybe Target should dedicate ONE WHOLE AISLE TO COMMON SENSE! I mean, their prices are GREAT, and EVERYONE LOVES THEIR STORE so perhaps if the white trash IDIOTS of the world had access to LOTS OF COMMON SENSE RIGHT AT THEIR FINGERTIPS (complete with lee press on nails in flaming whore red) THEN PEOPLE LIKE ME WOULDN'T HAVE TO ENDURE THE ENDLESS QUESTIONS FROM THE IDIOT PARADE!
Rather than answer ANY of her questions, I could've just smiled & said " You want Aisle 5 for that... " and been on my MERRY WAY!

No lie, people like that actually live & breath & (sad to say) shop at my TARGET! *rolling eyes* Can't they just all go to WalMart & leave us Target'ers alone? GOOD LORD!
GOD HELP ME & SAVE ME FROM THE STUPIDITY OF OTHERS!

I need a steaming hot cup of tea & a sugar cookie... anyone else?

Let it snow...

Not a bad view from my bedroom window, huh?

Amazingly beautiful, isn't it?
I just LOVE when it SNOWS!

Reaching out to anyone who could possibly help this single Momma out...

You know, someone recently commented on how good a writer I was & would I be interested in perhaps writing children's books... the truth is, I've already written several, one in particular that I just think is the sweetest thing & hope to have published sometime in the near future. I've always enjoyed writing for as long as I can remember. Initially it was poems through high school & college, but then once I became a professional Nanny, my love of writing turned towards the magical imaginative world of children & hasn't left since. I love taking my thoughts and transforming them into words on a page that tell a story, and if it's a fun silly story then all the better!
The thing, however, with writing children's books is that it's a very tough market to get into & unless you have an agent, it's an uphill battle 210%. Most publishers don't want unsolicited manuscripts, period, end of story.

So I'm throwing it out there to all you in 'blogdome'... if you know of anyone who could help an aspiring children's book author out... don't be shy because I'd love any/all help I can get! Also, I'll promise to remember you in my credits! ;)

Ok, off to go watch Desperate Housewives & have a nice steaming cup of Tea~ mmmmm TEA! *grin* LOVE IT!

From Nanny, to Momma...

TiVo's off, Ebenezer's gone out one last time, had his cookie & a full water bowl... Through my little apartment for one final check... doors locked, lights off that need to be off & on that need to be on. Dishwasher's empty of all it's clean dishes & dirty ones take their place. Play room picked up for the most part & things are looking good for me to turn in for the night, but before I do, one last look... slowly I step inside this very pink girlie girl room & tip toe over to the side of the crib & peek over the edge.
She sleeps so soundly, her little chest rising & falling in rhythmic pattern... hand clutching Bear every so gently, yet firmly; never letting go of her best friend... she sleeps.
She sleeps because she knows she's safe. She sleeps because she knows she belongs. She sleeps because she knows she's loved... and I smile knowing that in about ten minutes or so, I too will drift off to sleep for the same reasons as my little girl.

I talk a lot about how I've been a Professional Nanny for so long & I know this & I know that, but the truth is, regardless of the things that I know I knew by heart, there was one thing I didn't know about my heart... one thing I hadn't counted on & couldn't have, not until the moment it happened. And that's just how much love the human heart can hold once you become a Mother. Ruby is the most precious little soul I've ever had the pleasure of knowing, and she's my daughter. How the hell did that even happen? What did I do right in my life to have been blessed with this child, this gift, this little soul who shows me every day what life is all about.
She smiles at the little things, has a laugh that could power the entire city of Boston, and a kiss that sends my heart soaring into outer space.
Sure, I know the proper 'protocol' for certain situations; I've cared for children of all ages... when they've been sick, when they've had a 103+ fever, when they've had bloody noses, chicken pox, the croupe, I've been sneezed on, coughed on, puked on, cried on, hugged, kissed, told I'm loved and returned the sentiment over a billion times, because it's true.
You have to love every child if you are to do the job of Nanny & do it right. You have to jump in head first & immerse yourself in all that is 'childlike' & surrender to it & let it become part of who you are, who you love to be, because kids can spot an adult from a mile away. They don't want adults to be 'in charge'... they want a 'friend', someone to be silly with while still having guidance & structure in their little worlds. It's a fine line but it's one I've been good at balancing successfully for many years now... Heck, I've even already had to give Ruby the Heimlich once because she literally was turning blue from choking on a little piece of peach. I've had to comfort her when she's fallen, kiss her when she cries, hug her just because... all these things come naturally to me because it's in my blood, it's who I am, who I've always been, but tonight, it occurred to me as I was staring over that crib rail gazing down at the beautiful child sleeping all snug in her bed with Bear...

...I am her Mother.
This little girl I am caring for & raising & loving & playing with & singing silly songs with & reading book after book to, this child who lights up my world & keeps me feeling like I've repeatedly won the lottery, she is my Daughter and I have finally found TRUE LOVE. It didn't come in the form of a man on one knee, it came in the form of a sweet, adorable Asian girl who comes up to my knee... and I am proud to call her my Daughter... trust me when I say to you that there is no sweeter thing in the world.

I love you Ruby Cate. Momma loves you more than you'll ever know. Thank you for blessing me with the gift of knowing the Joy of Motherhood.

May everyone else in the world who is hoping for the same joy to come to them, experience it as I have these past two months... for it is truly heaven on earth.

I JUST LOVE SURPRISES!!!

How wonderful it is to have friends who KNOW JUST HOW MUCH I lOVE SURPRISES!!

See this adorable shirt? Well, Momma didn't buy it & since I can't drive, I didn't either BUT MY GOOD FRIEND'S Donna & Joe thought that it would be a PERFECT SHIRT for me, and it IS!! THANK YOU BOTH SO MUCH FOR THINKING OF ME & BEAR IN SUCH A SPECIAL WAY! When I showed Bear the shirt, he was thrilled & felt SO VERY SPECIAL! You can see the excitement in his face! JUST LOOK!!

Ruby: "Can you see the shirt ok Momma, Is it coming in clear? (psst, sit up STRAIGHT Bear!)
How does Bear look? Is he smiling??
Bear: "Man... if I didn't LOVE her so much!!!"

Ruby: "Look at this Momma! Isn't Bear so neat??"
Bear: "Great, now she's got me doing TRICKS!" *ugh*

Ruby: "hee hee, THAT WAS SO MUCH FUN BEAR! LET'S DO THAT AGAIN!!"
Bear: "You CAN'T be SERIOUS?@$%#$
I just FELL BACKWARDS OFF YOUR HEAD for crying out loud!"

Ruby: " This is a close up of my new shirt! I just LOVE IT! Momma does too! And isn't it so cute that the little girl on my shirt has a special Bear too?!?"
Bear: " Clearly, I'm cuter..."

Ruby: " Here Bear, I'll read you your favorite book about the Ladybug!"
Bear: " Uh, that's your favorite book Ruby, mine is the one with the little mouse, the red ripe strawberry & the BIG HUNGRY BEAR."

Ruby: "Ewww Bear??!! What's that smell??? Did you do a toodle?"
Bear: "Uh, Ruby I hate to break it to you but I'm pretty sure it's your diaper..."

Ruby: "Heh heh, yeah, I guess you're right, I'm sorry!
... Hey Momma, I need a change!"
Bear: "I think I'm gonna be sick..."

A stroll down memory lane... China style!

Yesterday my little peanuts' OFFICIAL CITIZENSHIP PAPERS ARRIVED IN THE MAIL! Complete with a special letter to her from our President! Pretty neat if you ask me, I think I'll frame it! And, as if that wasn't exciting enough, two months ago today, Nov 21st, 2005... my adoption of little miss Ruby Cate Pei Mu was OFFICIAL! Allow me to take you all on a trip down memory lane:

In a very 'stark' looking, non-descript notary office room in Jiangxi province/Nanchang, China an even more non-descript gentleman sitting behind a plain wooden desk, looked over my paperwork, looked me up & down, glanced over at Ruby for a split second, stamped something and with a wave of his hand, motioned for us to leave... which we did.
I got out into the hallway & asked my friend Erika (Thia's Momma)
" Is that it? What just happened? " ...
she looked at me kinda just as dazed & confused & said,
" I think we're official now, the girls are ours... I guess, right?"

What did I know, I guess that's what just happened... I mean, nobody is coming out to try & take her from me and everyone else is going into this same office room with the same Man who is, one at a time, putting them through the identical quick process he put us through & then we all piled back downstairs & onto the bus once again and headed back to our hotel, babies in hand.

Now, don't get me wrong, I'd do this ENTIRE PROCESS OVER AGAIN AND AGAIN IF NEED BE TO ADOPT RUBY WITHOUT HESITATION, however... this process, and everything it entails, is seriously NOT for the weak of heart. I love my agency to pieces, without them I would've been lost but there were some bumps along this road to get to this point that nobody expected. Got'cha day was, in a word? Chaos! True, at the end of the tunnel was my precious Ruby but man, what a jungle THAT MESS was to TRUDGE THROUGH!

Then, the bus ride back from the Notary Offices, someone broadsided our bus! The bus driver immediately put the bus in PARK in the MIDDLE OF THE BUSY CHINA STREET and got out to 'discuss' this with said 'broadsider' man. Needless to say we were all a little horrified, seeing as how our children were IN OUR LAPS when the accident happened & thank GAWD I had my arms around Ruby snugly & my fingers interlaced good & tight, or she'd have gone FLYING!

Truth be told, our recent trip to Boston was like a walk in the park compared to the hustle, bustle & INSANITY that IS CHINA...

I will forever be grateful & humbled for the gift of becoming Ruby's mother, but I'll never forget what it took to make this dream of mine a reality.

... a good friend recently mentioned to me that for her, it was a difficult road as well, and that it really did take her entire families' help to get everything accomplished. She coined the familiar phrase; 'it takes an entire village to raise a child', and she's SO RIGHT on that! Without the help of everyone in my life, my parents, my family, my extended family, my friends etc... anyone who had even the slightest hand in helping me along this road... to you all I say a sincere & heartfelt; THANK YOU!

Without everyone's help, this village would be short it's most adorable member by far...
my beautiful daughter: Ruby Cate & her best friend Bear.

Life Is Good.

TWO Months TODAY & Nanny Q&A...

Ok, so today is our first Nanny Q&A day! It also happens to be the 2 month anniversary of GOTCHA DAY! =) I can't believe it's only been 2 months, I feel like Ruby has been in my life always. Sadly for me, today I'm not feeling so good so Ruby & I probably won't head out anywhere but more, have a special Momma & Ruby day right here in our little cozy apartment. Now, before I post these Q&A's, I want everyone to know that the answers I give are MY ANSWERS... it is what I would honestly do in reaction to being faced with that situation in any professional scenario or even a personal one. As I've said before, you may not always like my responses but you all knew this & agreed to it going into Nanny Q&A, so that said... sit back, enjoy the ride & feel free to comment, but please, if you have a Question & not a Comment, EMAIL me your questions by clicking on 'EMAIL ME YOUR QUESTIONS' at the top right of the blog, k? Thanks Everyone!!

And now, the first installment of; Nanny Q&A:

Q: Okay, here's my first question. You explained that you put Ruby to sleep and if she cries more than 15 minutes you go in and make any adustments needed. Although I don't have my daughter yet, I'm picturing me doing this, and then her continuing to cry and me going in every 15 minutes and not finding anything wrong. I know it's been working with you and Ruby, but what would you do if the baby keeps on crying for no other reason than that they just want you and don't want to be alone? I really don't want to co-sleep but I don't want to traumatize a child either. When I thought of bio kids I was always very set on letting them cry it out, but the whole abandonment issue is tugging at my heart now.

Christi

A: If you go in after the second round of the 'fifteen minute' rule & see that your baby is ok & it's not a diaper, it's not that she's lost her favorite toy, it's not that she needs a drink of water, (always keep a non spill water sippy in their cribs with them so that they don't ever dehydrate) it's clearly nothing other than she 'wants you' and she's trying her best to pull a 'baby power trip' on you, just give her a hug & a kiss, tell her you love her & put her back down, the same way you did fifteen minutes earlier, if she needs music, put that back on (repeat play till they're asleep is always a good thing) and turn off the light and quietly leave.
Babies, just like adults, have some SERIOUS RESOLVE when they want something, and if what she wants is to find your ''breaking' point, you need to show her that it's not happening. If you know in your heart that she's fine & healthy & is just being a crabby crabberson, leave her there & go do something else in the house. Kids don't cry forever & I don't suspect that she’ll continue to cry ALL NIGHT. She WILL eventually fall asleep once she learns that her tactics aren't working the way she had hoped.

For those that DO experience the constant crying that won't stop, perhaps the child is sick. Sick crying is completely different from 'I'm annoyed you're not with me' crying, and once you're a mom trust me, you'll know the difference. First, check for a temp & if there is one, try some children's tylenol & put her back down. If she continues to scream and the temp doesn't go down, then you need to call you're PCP or if it's after hours, the ER to ask for further assistance. If there's no tempt perhaps it's gas (mylecon drops help) or if she's having a hard time breathing, both of you should hop into the bathroom & sit on the floor while the shower is blaring & filling up the bathroom with warm steam vapors. (helps to open up her lungs a little better). Also, so does a warm mist humidifier for her bedroom.

Children's Benadryl is a LIFESAVER & A MUST HAVE IN EVERY HOME WITH A SMALL CHILD! I don't know what Ruby & I would've done without it those first few weeks.

Finally, although I don't personally approve of it, there are some babies who, in the end, just need to 'co sleep' with their mom/dad or both for a while. Thankfully, my daughter isn't one of them but in the end of the day, if it's what makes your child happy & comforts him/her, then I guess you do what you have to, to keep everyone happy, right? GOOD LUCK!

Q: How do you feel about M/D sleeping with baby?

I am asking this question because I have a niece (by marriage) who insists she sleeps with her brand new baby boy. She tells me that this is bonding time. She is nuts but I can't convince her. My poor nephew has no say to this because he tells me "my wife knows what to do and she is right". So, what do you think?

I have two munchkins I have adopted from China and they both slept in their own cribs and I have no problem with bonding. We do it when we are playing and other things we do together.

I have read so many books and magazine that sleeping with a baby is not good because of the suffocation by the parents when they roll over. My niece tells me she is a light sleeper and won't do that. I told her also when Mason (her new son) is older he should be sleeping in his own bed. She told me he won't because of the closeness he is with you. Still she comes back with an answer every time I give her advice. Help. I am giving up and I will give her your advice(s).

Sherrie

A: Sadly, this is an issue all too close to home, as I have a sister in law wearing the 'same shoes' as your niece. LOL My brother & his wife have a 3 month old that she's been sleeping with in the SAME BED since DAY ONE! Trust me when I say that I've told them till I'm BLUE in the face that it's COMPLETELY UNSAFE not to mention, a LIFELONG HABIT that they're CREATING!

Unfortunately, even the best of advice goes by the wayside when it's 'unsolicited'. My sister in law doesn't think that there's 'anything wrong' with her sleeping with my niece. Even my brother (I could smack him for this) has let her sleep on his chest here & there for naps! It's enough to send me to a MENTAL HOSPITAL! (And trust me, that's NOT gonna happen since I look HORRIBLE with MENTAL PATIENT BANGS!)
Moving right along...
Yes, there's lots of evidence to support how BAD of an idea this is, but again, people who don’t want your advice will only see it as you being a 'busy body / know it all' etc...
In this type of circumstance, all you can do is remember to include that little baby in your prayers each night before you go to bed that come the morning, they'll still be happy & healthy & unharmed from their night's 'family sleeping arrangements'.

It's funny that you should ask this question of me, not just because it hits so close to home but also because on a recent eppisode of The L Word, a couple who just had a baby is trying their hand at 'attachment parenting' where the child is in CONSTANT CONTACT with ANOTHER HUMAN BEING 24/7! (don’t even get me started on THAT!)
I remember watching that eppisode & all I could keep thinking as I watched both Bette & Tina all snug in their bed with their daughter was " OMG THAT KID'S GONNA GET SMOTHERED & SUFFOCATE!"

So, I guess the bottom line is, if you've already mentioned to your niece several times that it's not the best idea & perhaps she may want to rethink her decision to 'sleep in the same bed' with the child and she's ignored your pleas, unfortunately... there's not much anyone can do as ultimately, it's her child & her mistake to make.

As far as 'bonding with your adopted child' that can be done in simply SPENDING LOTS OF QUALITY TIME WITH THEM! Playing together, talking together, doing anything, so long as it's together, that is bonding time. Bonding doesn't just happen when you're sleeping people, c'mon... Ruby and I get down on the floor together, play with her fake food, take turns feeding Bear his veggies & 'bottle' and we go for walks together, feed the birds & squirrels together & ANYTHING THAT IS QUALITY TIME SPENT TOGETHER IS A BONDING EXPERIENCE! So don't worry that if you don't co-sleep with your child that they're not going to 'love you as much or bond to you as much'... You buy that then I've got a bridge I'd like to sell you! ;)
Just laugh together, play together, be silly together, smile together, love together and you'll find that that's the best path to a WONDERFUL PARENT CHILD RELATIONSHIP! Remember too that although it's wonderful that lots of you have biological children, there are also just as many of us who have decided to create our families through adoption, whether international or otherwise and children don't necessarily need to come from us physically to be 100% completely our children or feel LOVED.

Love makes a parent, not bloodline... remember that. Plenty of people have bio kids & aren't fit to parent an ant farm much less a human being. (and NO I'm not speaking of anyone I know personally, but you just turn on the news on any given night & see the type of garbage going on in the world around us...) Donating a sperm does not a 'Dad' make and neither does being the oven for 9 months make a 'mother' ... A LOVING CARING DEDICATED PATIENT GENTLE AND KIND PERSON WITH ALL THE LOVE IN THE WORLD TO SHARE MAKES A PARENT! (getting off my soap box now...)

Aside from that, I really don't have much more to give you on that, but I can promise you this; every night when I keep my niece Isabella in my prayers that she too wakes up healthy & ALIVE, I'll keep your little guy in my prayers as well.
GOOD LUCK!

Q: What medicines should I have on hand for the infant toddler years? I'd like to start buying them one at a time as I go grocery shopping so by trip time I have everything I need. Thanks!

Julie

A: That's a great question, Julie. The first thing to remember is all medication has an expiration date on it. That said, I wouldn't start buying anything for the house until about 3 months prior to travel. Any earlier than that & you're risking the medication going bad before you even have a chance to use it. Also, as with ANY MEDICATION ALWAYS FOLLOW THE DIRECTIONS PRINTED ON THE BOX! It is not my intention for you all to go running out & get all this stuff & just 'give it' to your child without knowing first if it's something that is AGE APPROPRIATE... Ok, now THOSE THINGS SAID...
Here are the basics that should be in EVERY home with a child:

Bacitracin
Hydrogen Peroxide
Children's Tylenol Infant Drops
and/or Infants' Advil Drops
Children’s Benadryl
Triaminic ANYTHING ( they have cold, allergy, cough, etc...) Great Products!
Mylecon Drops for Gas
St.Joseph's Baby Aspirin
Calemine lotion for any skin irritation
Little Tummy's Gas Relief Drops
Little Noses Decongestant Nose Drops
Little Noses Saline Spray/Drops
Little Fevers fever/pain reliever
(all the 'little' products came to me in a gift pack so if you get this you probably don't necessarily need all the other stuff, however I prefer the other things to these, but it's another option. This way you get everything in one fell swoop & don't need to go searching for something specific for cold, or fever, or noses, etc..)
Pediacare (either pops or liquid or packets to be mixed with water) for preventing dehydration.
Gentle NAturals Deet-Free Bug Repellent
Either a hot/cool mist vaporizer OR the plug in version for congestion.
Baby Bear Sort Throat Pops (for the older toddler age & up child)
Syrup of Ipecac for accidental poison ingestion.
Castor Oil for for Constipation & to help induce vomiting.
Hylands Teething Tablets to aid in the pain associated with teething, and for the record I'm not a huge fan of Orajel products, PERIOD! They only TOUGHEN the gums making teething a MORE PAINFUL experience than it has to be. My good friend Karen got these tablets for her daughter Gwen & said they work like A DREAM!
Vapo-rub for Infants for congestion. (Thanks Erika!!)

If I can think of anything else I'll be sure to let you know but I think for now this should be a great starter list to work on & just remember to not start buying anything too early as you'll ultimately waste your money if it ends up going bad. =)

& Friend Jen who was on the phone with me while I was answering this one & helped tremendously as she too has had much nanny experience.
THANKS JEN!!!

Off to Boston!! *UPDATE!!* (scroll down)

We're off to Boston in a matter of minutes!! It'll be Ruby's first time on a TRAIN! =) And Momma's first time with a child & a huge diaper bag & a carriage ON A TRAIN! lol hehehehe But hey, we have this VERY IMPORTANT appointment with Dr. Laurie Miller at the International Adoption Clinic, so we're going no matter what. =)

I'll update once we're home but it may not be till after Ruby's in bed tonight, as she's got several shots in her immediate future & poor thing doesn't even have a clue. =*(

WISH US LUCK!

-Amy

*UPDATE!!*

It's 4:36pm & it was a LONG DAY but worth every second! Ruby was MY SHINING STAR TODAY! She loved the train ride in & was intrigued by the subway (orange line)... obviously Momma took WAY TOO MANY PICTURES, and aside from the fact that they needed to take 11 vials of BLOOD (THAT'S RIGHT, 11 VIALS OF BLOOD!) from miss Ruby Cate, she was 110% A-OK! =) She really didn't even mind them sticking her with the needle, only cried for a second but it was more because we had to wake her up to take the blood, not so much because of the needle. My little girl is JUST LIKE HER MOMMA when it comes to NAPS! (They're fun to take but GOD HELP WHOEVER WAKES US UP!) hehehe
So all in all, the general concensus was that she's RIGHT ON TRACK FOR EVERYTHING! (big cheezy grin) and that the doctor was beyond amazed at the progress Ruby's made since coming home! HIP HIP HORRAY!!!!!
I am still going to schedule some Early Intervention visits to be sure that she's coming along as she should & the woman who will come to our house to do this was SO WONDERFUL WITH RUBY TODAY! So I'm pleased that I know ahead of time who it is who will be coming! =)

Anyhoo, I know that all anyone wants to see are the pics, so... HERE YOU GO... ENJOY!

Sitting patiently on the train with my best friend Bear. *kissing him*
I LOVE YOU BEAR! I'M SO GLAD YOU'RE HERE WITH ME!

Our view from the window on the train, kewl huh! Hey Momma, is that the Zakim Bridge up ahead??

WOW!! It's pretty big in person!

Eh, I think it probably looks prettier at night when the blue lights are on, though...

Ah, here we are, NORTH STATION, BOSTON! Home of THE BOSTON GARDEN! What the heck is with this TD Banknorth crap anyway? Sorry people, I know in this day & age when everyone's tryin' to toot their own horn & get credit for stuff, a big whooptie doo bank is no exception, HOWEVER, ALL TRUE BOSTONIANS WILL FOREVER CALL THIS THE BOSTON GARDEN! So THERE! *MY MOMMA SAID SO!!!*

The Garden is home to our wonderful Boston Bruins
and let's not forget our FANTASTIC BOSTON CELTICS!!!

Oooh, it's dark down here, hey Momma, is this the subway? Oooh look here comes our train!

Yep, that WAS our train & it's even DARKER inside the car
than it was while out on the platform waiting for it!

Hey, we MUST be close cuz didn't Auntie Kris & Cousin Stephanie tell us to look for
the BIG BEAR WITH THE BLOCKS? I THINK THAT'S HIM!!!!!!

Yep!! Here we are!! New England Medical Center!!
Didn't take too long & it was fun to ride on a train!

Ugh, all this hospital stuff has really taken it's toll on me, not to mention it's pretty BORING stuff, think I'll just take a nap right here...

G'night Bear...
ZZZZZZZZZZzzzzzzzzz

Above is the photo of the ELEVEN VIALS OF BLOOD they TOOK from me!
You'll notice there aren't any pics of me during that process... Momma had to wait till I was out of the room & with Nanna before the lady would let her go back in & take this quick shot of my blood... guess you're not supposed to have cameras in there but Momma insisted because it was such a BIG MOMENT for me and because I was SO BRAVE! So, the nice nurse said OK! =)

ALL DONE & WE'RE FINALLY ON THE TRAIN HEADED FOR HOME!!! =)

Bear & I had a good day despite the needle incident, everything else went great! What's that Momma? You want me to do what? Ugh, ok but I told you I won't do two shows a night ok? So, THIS IS IT!!! Now, PAY ATTENTION:

Now you see me...

Now you DON'T! hehehe I know, it is fun, but
ONCE IS ENOUGH, OK? hee hee

Ok people, show's over, move along... ;)

THANK YOU & GOODNIGHT!
Ruby has LEFT THE BLOG!
